How to Define Good Design?

The first thing to come to mind when we think of a good design is probably that it is visually appealing. However, remember the saying? “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Everybody would have a different opinion on what a good design is.

Well, here’s a thing, if you were ill, would you rather listen to the opinion of a veteran doctor, or, let’s say, your neighbor? Of course the first one. So, it is important to define it based on professionalism. In that matter, let’s hear what Dieter Rams, a German industrial designer, said about it. 

The Key Principles

German industrial designer Dieter Rams, known for his minimalist approach to design, examined the nature of good design to figure out what designers must do. Rams had a significant impact on the design and functionality of the majority of consumer goods used in the late 20th and early 21st century. Rams’s trademarks are all around us, from coffee machines to toothbrushes and alarm clocks, and much more. His aesthetics represent simplicity, restraint, and honesty. 

After studying the world around him in the late 1970s and discovering “an impenetrable confusion of forms, colors, and noises,” Rams asked himself the crucial question, “Is my design good design?” Rams’s response can be found in his 10 principles. Even though they’re most relevant to industrial design, these principles are universal and apply to virtually every field of design

1. Innovative

The world is constantly changing, and new technical advancements present fresh chances for creative design. Design innovation means keeping up with advancements in cutting-edge technologies.

2. Aesthetic

Although it would appear that we are returning to subjective terminology, the goal here is not to make your designs acceptable to the general public, but to your target audience like it. You can accomplish it by striking the correct balance between text, color, and shape. An attractive, pleasant, and welcoming design draws clients’ attention to the brand.

3. Makes a Product Useful

Technology advancement and creative design go hand in hand like bread and butter. However, design never stops evolving on its own; it always advances in concert with advances in technology.

4. Makes a Product Understandable

A product’s function should be apparent from its design. Good design makes the product self-explanatory by appealing to the user’s intuition and demonstrating its function right away.

5. Unobtrusive

The goal of a product will be obscured by an obtrusive design. As a result, the design should be neutral in relation to the product’s intended use. Being beautiful for the sake of decorating is not the goal.

6. Honest

A product shouldn’t look to be something it isn’t. False promises should not be used by good designers to try to influence customers. Your design should only be as creative, strong, and/or important as it claims to be. 

7. Long-lasting

Design should be long-lasting, even in the fast-paced world of today. To make sure it never seems outdated, stay away from becoming too trendy. Clean, classic designs help avoid the unwanted trademark styling that identifies a thing with a certain time period and makes it forgettable.

8. Thorough Down to the Last Detail

Nothing should be left up to chance when it comes to the consumer. Paying attention to the smallest details conveys to them that you are interested in their preferences. To put it another way, no detail should be missed. Accuracy and attention are crucial.

9. Environmentally Friendly

The goal of good design is to have as little of an environmental impact as possible. Resources, physical, and visual pollution should be kept to a minimum throughout a product’s lifecycle.

10. As Little as Possible

It’s back to basic meaning less is more. You can maximize the simplicity by concentrating just on its most important elements. In other words, be simplistic but not plain.
